    Remote work gives you flexibility but your taxes j Remote work gives you flexibility but your taxes just got more complex. If you work in more than one state, your tax “home” is now based on where you work the most during any 3-month stretch not where you live or where your employer is based. That means your state taxes and withholdings could change, and you might even owe taxes in more than one state if you're not careful. Here’s what to do: - Keep track of which states you’re working in - Let your HR or payroll team know if your location changes - Check in with a bookkeeper or tax pro to avoid paying twice or missing a filing The new tax rules around multi-state filing and tax “home” changes can affect both employees and independent contractors. Independent contractors handle their own tax filings, so it's up to them to report income correctly. Remote work equals freedom. But it also means staying on top of the tax stuff.     Forming an LLC by itself does not change your tax Forming an LLC by itself does not change your tax situation. By default, a single-member LLC is treated as a disregarded entity. That means you’ll still report your income on Schedule C and pay self-employment tax and income tax just like a sole proprietorship. So where do the tax savings come from? To access potential tax benefits, you must take an additional step: filing Form 2553 (or Form 8832) to elect S-Corporation status. However, this only makes sense when your business consistently earns at least $40,000 in net profit annually. That’s because S-Corps come with added payroll, compliance, and administrative costs. When S-Corp status is right for you, it allows you to split your income into two parts: 1. A reasonable salary (which is subject to payroll taxes) 2. Remaining profit taken as distributions (which are not subject to self-employment tax) An LLC offers legal protection but not automatic tax savings.
