    Let’s clear up the confusion between COGS (cost Let’s clear up the confusion between COGS (cost of goods sold) and gross profit. COGS includes only the direct costs to produce or deliver your product or service like materials, packaging, or subcontracted labor. Gross profit = revenue - COGS It tells you what’s left before things like rent, marketing, or software. The mistake? Mixing regular business expenses into COGS. That throws off your gross profit and hides how much you're truly making. It tells you if your pricing and production costs are working in your favor.     Not everything you pay yourself is counted as an “expense” and that’s totally normal depending on your entity type! If you’re a sole proprietor or single-member LLC, your "paycheck" is an owner’s draw, not an expense, so it won’t show up on the P&L. It’s pulled from equity instead. S-Corp owners? Your salary does show on the P&L, but distributions do not. Make sure your bookkeeping reflects this correctly!
